In January 2023 I landed at John F. Kennedy airport from a fulfilling experience in Africa feeling light and optimistic. Although I was dreading returning to work in a few days, I told myself the energy I had summed up from my enjoyment exploring Dakar, Senegal and delighting in 'Detty December' in Accra, Ghana was enough to complete my ‘Need To Dos’ for the rest of the year. My one major task was to hang on to my job long enough to purchase a house. I have to point out here that the plans you make, chances are, God or the Universe has better for you. About five months later, I no longer had a job or a major source of income.
Yes, you guessed it! I had to mark my task as “incomplete.” Fact, me and anxiety are long time frenemies and always behind her lurking is depression. Still, carrying them both, I could see a path ahead for my next steps. I was fortunate to have some financial cushion to take care of myself. With the help from family, friends and a seasonal part time job, I could stretch my finances for as long as possible. So, I rested with the main purpose of recovering from COVID induced burnout, focused on career development skill building and prioritized traveling.
It's near the end of 2024 now and a lot has happened. I spent time being a nomad and had the privilege to explore Colombia, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and Guatemala. I also up-skilled to prepare for a new career in Cyber Security. The journey so far definitely hasn’t been without challenges. Managing anxiety that sometimes leads to depression really can be crippling. I cannot emphasize the tremendous amount of gratitude I have to God, my family and friends. In the spirit of giving thanks:
I am grateful to myself for willing and doing.
I am grateful to my body for moving well and being well.
I am grateful to my mind for being confident, creative and curious.
Lastly, manifesting here, I am grateful for multiple sources of income.
For the average person right now, there is much to be anxious about and I hope and pray for an opportunity for you to make room for the moments that matter and enjoy the simple things in your life.
